OUR INITIATIVES

Planetary Music Movement

A series, curated by cellist Dara Hankins and saxophonist Alfredo Colon, featuring artists of African descent through monthly concerts in partnership with Black-owned businesses in New York City. In 2024, this series will expand to California thanks to the support of California Arts Council.

Increase musician payment minimums

Increasing musician payment is important to us. We cover the gap for house concerts where musicians leave with less than $125 per musician, because we believe that house concerts should be accessible and affordible for audiences, while reducing financial risk for musicians.

Provide fiscal sponsorship

Entrepreneurial musicians usually face steep learning curves for setting up a nonprofit and infrastructure when they want to create a new project or ensemble. We provide fiscal sponsorship, fundraising advice, and general liability insurance for musicians who want to fundraise and present concerts through Groupmuse Foundation’s nonprofit infrastructure.

Subsidize videography, audio recording, and photography expenses

Some musicians do not have access to the budget required for high quality videography, audio recording, and photography, even though these are necessary materials for their portfolios, websites, and applications. A professional videographer charges $750+ to record a concert, which is a big expense for any freelancing musician. We cover these expenses so that musicians can focus on building their online portfolios.

Support musician cooperativism

We are dedicated to exploring new infrastructural solutions to increasing economic independence and sustainable livelihoods for artists. We offer grants to musicians who are dedicated to cooperative and collaborative decisionmaking to build more vibrant and diverse communities for artists to live and work in.
